Originally known as Cane Island, named after the creek that runs through the area, the town was established in the mid-1800s. In the late 1800s, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (the "Katy") was built through the town, which eventually led to the town's name being changed to Katy in 1896.
For much of the 20th century, Katy was known as the "Rice Capital of the World." The flat coastal prairie land and abundant water supply made it ideal for rice farming. Rice farming, along with peanuts and cotton, formed the backbone of the local economy. The annual Katy Rice Harvest Festival still celebrates this agricultural heritage today.
The construction of Interstate 10 in the 1960s transformed Katy from a small farming community into a rapidly growing suburb of Houston. The development of large master-planned communities, excellent schools, and a booming local economy have made Katy one of the most desirable places to live in the Greater Houston area.
